From the Vault: My Threads Prediction
The very first edition of Social Studies was my Threads prediction.
Thought it would be fun to pull it out and take a look at how my guesses faired.
I’ve also seen a ton of predictions around Bluesky and Lemon8.
I’m hesitant to make any massive guesses, but if you’re curious on my take, just switch out the word Threads below for any other new app that’s popping up and my thoughts are probably pretty similar.
I'm sure you've already heard that Meta is launching Threads.
Essentially, it's a Twitter competitor.
Will it soar to #1 on the charts and send Musk into bankruptcy?
No clue.
But here's what I do know:
Every social media pro should download Threads and use it consistently. It's common knowledge that Instagram gives the juice to it's new features.
It makes sense right?
Meta spent a bunch of money developing this thing. They want it to succeed. They're going to use everything in their power (the algorithm included) to ensure it's success.
My friend launched @hertrueworth on IG right when carousels were coming out. She used them all. the. time.
1.6 million followers and 2 book deals later, you can see how that's working out for her.
Another old coworker of mine launched @leadershipfeed right when Reels launched. He posted multiple times per day for months.
He hit 100k followers in less than a year.
It goes without saying that the content has to be good.
But combine good content with an algorithm that rewards the consistent use of a new feature...
Boom.
I could be wrong.
Threads could be a huge flop. (Remember Meta's app Lasso that was TikTok clone? Yeah, me neither.)
But let's think worst case scenario...
You repurpose content you've already created for other platforms. You post it on Threads. Nothing happens.
Now time for best case scenario...
You repurpose content you've already created for other platforms. You post consistently on Threads. The algorithm gives you a disproportionate amount of reach. You gain a massive following. You become wildly wealthy and famous and are hand-fed grapes while lounging in your ocean-front cabana.
The actual outcome is probably going to be somewhere in the middle, but hey... I could be wrong.
