An old podcast
Once upon a time I started a podcast.
Very quickly I realized I didn’t have the time/energy to keep it going.
BUT… I have a ton of old interviews from incredible social pros.
One of those is with Anthony Yepez.
He started in social back in the days of MySpace and has worked for brands like Orange Theory, BodyBuilding .com, Digitas, and Spartan Race.
Combed through my conversation with him and pulled out some incredible nuggets of wisdom….
1) Before you execute, be 100% sure that you understand your audience, their needs, and their preferences.
2) Don’t just do what everyone else does. Is there a strategy that nobody else is utilizing? Be raw and unique.
3) Don’t try to be funny… be funny. If (and only if) humor aligns with your brand, use it as a way to connect with your audience. BUT… people can smell phony corporate humor from a mile away. It’s better to not be funny than to try and be funny and fall flat.
4) Always have a Plan B. When you’re taking a calculated risk, don’t just prepare for success. What are you going to do if it doesn’t work? What will you say to the internal team? What will you try next?
5) Don’t hate on paid (or organic). Paid social and organic social are parts of the same team. Use their learnings to enhance your own results.
6) Blaming the algorithm is a waste of time. It might be the algorithm’s fault that you’re not growing. That doesn’t make complaining about it any more effective.
