Social advice from LinkedIn/Snap/a16z…

In our very first Social Studies Community event, I chatted with Ish Verduzco.

While the events are exclusive to the community, I wanted to share the big takeaways.

Ish has worked in social at LinkedIn, Snap, a16z and has built a personal brand of well over 100k followers.

Without further ado…

1) You should build a personal brand.

You don’t need 100k followers, but have a place where you talk about your wins.

You never know when you’ll need to leverage your network for a new gig.

It’s ok if you only post a couple times per week. Just be consistent.

2) Have a sandbox.

You should have a place or an account where you can experiment and try new stuff.

That testing will make you a better at your main job and provides a place to flex the creative muscle.

3) Get your foot in the door.

Your first job probably won’t be your dream job.

That’s ok.

Get your foot in the door and take advantage of every chance that you’re given.

4) Shoot your shot.

Ish talked about his days as a DJ, and how he built a following around that business.

People took notice around the office and soon he was “that guy with the big following.”

He also talked about some unconventional job hunting strategies.

It pays off when you go the extra mile to be memorable… even if you don’t land the job.

5) No matter how big your audience… community management is a superpower.

Enough said.

6) Do more brand/audience research.

I used to think I was good at audience research.

Then I talked to Ish.

When he started at a16z as the social lead for crypto, he interviewed 90+ people to get a feel for the brand and the audience.

The single best thing you can do to grow a social following is to understand everything about your audience.

7) Have a goal.

What’s that old saying?

If you don’t have a goal, you’ll miss it every time?

Same with social posts.

You should be thinking about what you’re trying to accomplish and backing into the most effective way to do it.

8) Organic and paid should benefit one another.

Use organic content insights to fuel paid ad creative.

9) Those who can’t create, curate.

In the early stages of an account or a brand, one of the most powerful things you can do is to become a hub for high value curated content to kickstart the growth process.

btw… Ish has a newsletter. I’m a big fan of what he writes.

The Creator Blueprint by Ish VerduzcoI spent the last 10 years working at LinkedIn, Snapchat, and a16z. Now I'm sharing everything I've learned along the way.
